I was very happy to stumble upon your website late last night.  My Great Great Great Grandfather is Charles Thornton McNeil (who was born aboard the ship Thornton) in 1856.  Because of his death at the age of 33 and the death of his daughter at age 67, my Grandmother, Jenetta Hibbard McNeil (Remington), we didn't have any of the family history stories about Charles or his parents.  I am so grateful to your group for posting the life histories of Thomas McNeil and Janet Reid and of their oldest daughter Margaret McNeil Ballard.  We were able to learn a lot about them from these histories.

Our research on this line is nearly complete thanks to your efforts.  I cannot express how grateful we are... a blessing.  The only hole we have left in our story, is Charles Thornton McNeil's wife - Emeline Hibbard.  They were married in SLC in 1880 and Charles passed away in 1889.  Grandma can't remember any of the details, just that she remarried.  I don't know if you have any more information about that portion of your line - but if you do - or have a hunch of someone I can contact, I would be forever grateful.  (I guess I should clarify - we do have the genealogy for her, just not her story.)

Being a 5th generation member of the LDS church (on this side of my family) means there isn't a lot of temple work to find and do - my interest is in their stories.  How they came to be members of the church, the trials and sacrifices they made for me - that's what I am look for.

So any clues you can provide would be amazingly helpful.  And if you'd like any additional information about Charles' decendancy, I would happily ablige.

I am deeply grateful to Marriner Cardon for his work, The Search for Jean Cardon.  That work, with all the appendices is most inspiring, and a great service to our family.  I read every word.  I will find his instructions most valuable on my next trip to the Valleys, since I was unable to locate the Cardon Borgata last time I went.  I hope Marriner knows we appreciate his efforts, and we greatly appreciate him making this work freely available to all.

Now it would be so great for someone to continue the research with a like history of Marthe Marie Tourn's parentage.  Since hers goes to the Malans, I am wondering if it would be possible to have a link to any Malan website (or for that matter, to have links to the other emigrants lines for cross-referencing.  I do note additional information in other places on this website, including the Stokie work--[although unfortunately she completely overlooked descendants of my forbear, Jean Cardon]).

I was able to visit J. D. Malan's home in San Secondo with the Malans in 2000, and saw his engraving in the home, "J.D. Malan, 1841".  The home is well kept, and the lady who lived there showed us the rooms and was very friendly.  Since (I believe) he ordained Philippe Cardon, and they were close associates, I would think some of these other emigrant families would be important to the Cardon researchers.  Also, the home shows the penchant for the Vaudois to have the animals living adjacent to the living quarters--very interesting.  Another interesting place was the Castle of Chillon, on the far shore of Lake Geneva.  This castle is easy to reach by ferry from Geneva, and it belonged to the Duke of Savoy; I was told by the guide that this was one of the places from whence the duke sent out troops to harass the Vaudois from time to time.  Back in the Valleys, the guide at the cultural center in Torre Pellice took us to one of the caves that the Vaudois hid in over the centuries to escape the duke's troops.  I felt that I was standing on holy ground.  No doubt the Cardons who have traveled to the Valleys already know about, and have seen, these historic sites, but there may be later visitors who would benefit from an expansion of Marriner's appendix of site descriptions.  Is there anyone out there who would be willing to put a list of relevant "sites to visit" on our website?  (Such as the above, the Chanforan site, the College of the Barbes, the memorial plaque to Lorenzo Snow on "Mt Brigham", the Cottian Alps passageway of the Cardon emigrants, etc.).

Last, but not least, I am very grateful to Brookie Peterson and/or whoever posted the Cardon Letters, 1871-1908.  I have always wondered what Anne's feelings were, but never knew.  These letters are most illuminating, and a real service to the Cardon descendants!!

I am still anxious to correspond with any of Jean Cardon's and Anna Furrer's descendants or researchers.  I am happy to share any information I have.

I find no notes for Edith Jemima Done and no reference to the surnames of her descendants in the descendants pages on the website. Have we been excommunicated from the Cardons?

Mel Thatcher

Webmaster note:  No, it just means that no one has submitted the data for inclusion on the webpages yet.  You can submit the data as a PAF backup file or as a Gedcom file.  E-mail the file by clicking here or mail them to me at 3205 South 975 East, Bountiful, UT, 84010

I have been working in your site today and noticed your request to have some of the histories retyped.  I would be happy to do that for you if it hasn't already been done.  I would just like to say that I have loved reading the histories that are in this site.  Thanks so much for sharing.  --  Paula Wright

I hope things are well with you and your family.  I appreciate all your help.  I was wondering if you could add a "New" link to our site?  This might help family, so they don't need to go through all the links to see what we have added.
Thanks again

Ken

Webmaster note:  This "New" page was added as "Recent Updates"

I should have put my wife’s maiden name as Chappell.  What a great site!
Thanks,

Thanks for keeping up the web site. It is a real service to our family.

I was just wondering how many people are a part of the group?  I only saw 20
names on the guest list but I got the impression that there were more
members.  By adding my name to the list, is there a periodic email about
news, latest research findings, updated gedcom, etc that comes out or should
I check the website periodically?

I wish I had something to contribute (photos, stories, etc.) but I'm afraid
I don't.

I'm just starting to look into my genealogy and I am very excited that a
branch of my tree has an organization like this.  There was an Elder Cardon
in my mission, we might have been related and I never knew it!

Thank you for all your effort.

Sincerely,
David Farstead

Thanks for adding my name to the list.  I really enjoyed browsing the web site.  I thought it was well organized and easy to navigate.  The only thing I couldn’t find was a list of organization officers.
Thanks for your efforts,

Dale

Webmaster note:  The list of organization officers was added to the "Home" page.

Um ... I didn't see anything there, and the date on the page said last
updated 2/1/04.  Does it take a while for the updates to get posted?
Laurie

Webmaster note:  This question was posed just after information was entered in the "Guest Book".   All "Guest Book" entries are sent to me by e-mail.  After review, which may take days, I add the information to the "Guest List".

Almost midnight but must extend my deepest thanks for your promptness in putting my great grandfather's history, along with the photos, on your website.  Reviewed it quickly and looks excellent.

His history is on my WORD, which my daughter finally taught me how to navigate somewhat.  Will forward to you as soon as this busy weekend passes.

Also Charles Lorraine looks OK, but wasn't sure from my quick look that Lorraine appears, instead of just L.   Lorraine was the name that he was always referred to.

Again, many thanks.

Dan

Thanks.  I like the info and format for the Cardon’s.  Hopefully this will be the framework for an updated directory for the family

The history of Anna Furrer on our Web Site looks great !

EXCEPT. of course for my typo in the 4th paragraph. Departure of her handcart company is listed as 1956.  Obviously, should be 1856.  Can your correct my error/

Thanks,
Dan

This is an interesting site, and I'm glad you're doing it. I didn't realize
the Cardons were a Piedmontese family. Several of the Piedmont families
settled in Ogden where I live, including the Beuses and Malans.

I have been very interested in The Cardon Families homepage.  I see that you have part of the descendants on the homepage.  Since the 2003 reunion I have been updating the Family Group Sheets that are found in the "Blue" Cardons!  book.  I have, so far, completed the descendants of Jean and Catherine.  I am currently working on Marie Madeleine's family.  I would like to have these added to what you have done.  If this is OK I will be glad to send the data.  I use PAF 5 and I can put it into what ever format would be easiest for you to use.  Let me know what you would like me to do.  Michael

You can fix my information on my relationship to Philippe Cardon.  I really didn’t know what you meant but now that I see examples it is plain to see.

I read histories about Stalle and Suzette Stalle.  What other one would you recommend?

 John

10/7/03

I looked through my "ancestor" on the Cardon Family to see if I had any information on Emanual Cardon.  I do not.  I called Bob Cardon to ask if he has any history on him and he does not.  He referred me to Ken Cardon which I plan to call this evening.  Bob Cardon will call Verla Cardon (his oldest living sister to see if she has any info on him.  I will get back with you when we hear back.

Last resort.  I think the Emanual Cardon's decendanats can pull together basic info on their great grandfather.  I am going to make this a project.

I'll keep you informed.  If you have any references or suggestions, let me know.

In reviewing the history on Louis Philip that you sent, page 11 seems to be missing.  Do you have a page 11?
Carl

Webmaster note:  If anyone has the original or a copy of the original of the Louis Philip Cardon history, please send me a copy of page 11.

Possibly the oldest living great-grandaughter of Philippe Cardon, Carrie Ricks Kowallis Salveson Merrill (8a-3-9), born on March 4, 1902 in Logan,  passed away on 14 Sep 2003.  She was talented, devoted and enthusiastic to the very end of her days. Funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at the Centerville Fifth ward, 270 North 300 E.  Interment in Richmond Cemetery.

Webmaster note:  An "Obituary" page was added to the website.

Beautiful website.
We'll certainly link to it ASAP. If you permit me I would also like to link to the individual biographical works .
I'll probably be touchin base with you, concerning some more information I need on the early Cardons.
Thank you very much for contacting me  and for adding a link to Bella Sion.
Sincerely,
Sal Velluto

Ken Cardon, our new Reunion chairman for 2005, just asked me to contact you regarding the Philippe Cardon Family reunion financial status for 2003, for use in your Website.
Incidentally, I was unaware of the Website until Ken advised me. Delighted to view the Website.  It is marvelous !

If we just have a typed hard copy, how is the best way to get it into a
format that you can put on the site?
Thanks
Ken

Webmaster note:  Preferred method is to re-type it in Word or Word Perfect and e-mail it.  You can also mail it to me at 3205 S 975 East Bountiful, Ut, 84010 and I will scan it and post it.

I'm extremely pleased the way everything came out.   Normally, I
use Netscape and I was not able to download Appendix 3 with it, getting the
message:  "There was an error processing a page.  Wrong number of arguments
for a setcolor operator."    Don't know what that means but I'm passing it on.
When I tried to download Appredix 3 with Internet Explorer there
was no problem and it came right through.

Thanks for your effort on this.

It is amazing to me that you could get that on the web site so soon. I think it is set up very well and easily accessed. Thanks very much.
