Mexico Project Update

Thanks to all who have given so generously to help raise the funds to erect monuments to our ancestors who died in the Mormon Colonies in Mexico.  Please see the Travel page for highlights of the family trip to Mexico October 10th.

Those who attended the last reunion will recall that Boyd prepared a presentation for us entitled "The Cardons In The Mexican Colonies" (click the highlighted title to see the slides from the presentation).  From that presentation, we discussed placing grave markers on unmarked graves in Mexico. 

Background History:  Early in 1885 Philip (Louis Phillippe) and his oldest son Joseph (Joseph Samuel) Cardon moved to Mexico.  They left in February, and arrived at their destination in March.  By 1897, Emanuel moved his family to live in Mexico as well.  Emanuel Philip Cardon is the second son of Louis Philippe Cardon and Susette Stalé.  About the same time, the third son, Louis Paul Cardon moved his family to Dublán to set up a school system.

Our family database shows the following individuals related to the Cardon line that died in Mexico:

Louis Philippe Cardon - son of Philippe Cardon and Marthe Marie Tourn.  He was born 9 Mar 1832 in Prarostino, Torino, Italy and died 9 Apr 1911 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico.

Joseph Samuel Cardon - son of Louis Philippe Cardon and Susette Stalé.  He was born 9 Jan 1858 in Ogden, Weber, Utah and died 26 Sep 1908 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico. 

Selenia Mesenile Walker - wife of Joseph Samuel Cardon.  She was born 4 Feb 1855 in Grantsville, Tooele, Utah and died 6 Oct 1906 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico.

Leonard Jesse Cardon - son of Joseph Samuel Cardon and Selenia Mesenile Walker.  He was born 6 Jun 1887 in Colonia Juarez, Mexico and died young.

Eugene William Cardon - son of Joseph Samuel Cardon and Selenia Mesenile Walker.  He was born 3 Sep 1889 in Colonia Juarez, Mexico and died in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Mansel Lorenzo Cardon - son of Jospeh Samuel Cardon and Selenia Mesenile Walker.  He was born 10 Sep 1895 and died in 1904, in Mexico

James Ellis Cardon son of Joseph Samuel Cardon and Cornelia Woods Van Dam.  He was born 25 Sep 1884 in Taylor, Apache, Arizona and died in 1885 in Mexico.


Emanuel Philip Cardon - son of Louis Philippe Cardon and Susette Stalé.  He was born 29 Jan 1859, Ogden, Weber, Utah and died 12 Dec 1927 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico.

Ameila Marie Merrick - wife of Emanuel Philip Cardon.  She was born 13 Feb 1859 in Ogden, Weber, Utah and died 10 Feb 1933 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico. 

Ernest Cardon - son of Emanuel Philip Cardon and Amelia Marie Merrick.  He was born in Apr 1897 in Colonia Dublán and died 1 Jul 1897.


Paul Cardon - son of Louis Paul Cardon and Ellen Clymena Sanders.  He was born 23 Apr 1900 and died 23 Apr 1900 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico.

Irene Cardon - daughter of Louis Paul Cardon and Ellen Clymena Sanders.  She was born 23 Apr 1900 and died 23 Apr 1900 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico.

Marriner Sanders Cardon - son of Louis Paul Cadon and Ellen Clymena Sanders.  He was born 21 Oct 1906 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico and died 2 Jan 1909.

Louie Cardon - daughter of Louis Paul Cardon and Edith Jemima Done.  He was born 23 Dec 1901 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico and died 29 Sep 1902.

Eva Cardon - daughter of Louis Paul Cardon and Edith Jemima Done.  She was born 5 Nov 1911 in Colonia Dublán, Mexico and died 5 Jun 1912.


Jesse Leo Cardon - son of Jesse Leo Cardon and Frances Maude Farnsworth was born 29 Dec 1913 and died 9 Feb 1928 in Colonia Dublán.

Franklin Moses Cardon - son of Jesse Leo Cardon and Frances Maud Farnsworth was born 27 Oct 1920.  Franklin died 17 Sep 1927.

The father-in-law of Jesse Leo Cardon, Albert Stephen Farnsworth was born in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois on the 22nd of May 1844 and died in Guerrero, Chihuahua, Mexico on 28 Nov 1904.

Alma Platte Spilsbury, the father-in-law of Eugene Ernest Taylor (son of Ernest Guy Taylor and Selina Verminnie Cardon).  Alma was born 5 Aug 1850 at Platte River, Saunders, Nebraska.  He died in Colonia Juarez on 12 Jun 1920.

Mary Jane Redd, the mother-in-law of Eugene Ernest Taylor, was born 27 Apr 1858 in Spanish Fork, Utah.  She died 7 Jul 1945 in Colonia Juarez.

Andrew Christiansen Jensen, the father-in-law of Lester Leon Cardon, was born 20 Jul 1856 in Osterby, Aarlus, Denmark.  He died 1 Aug 1908 in Colonia Diaz.

Emily Thomas Burrell, the mother-in-law of Lester LaVon Cardon, was born 18 Dec 1878 in Sheffield, York, England and died 14 Oct 1970 in Colonia Juarez.

Ernest Leander Taylor, the father-in-law of Selina Verminnie Cardon, was born 8 Aug 1852 in San Bernardino, Los Angeles, California and died 7 Nov 1917 in Colonia Juarez.

Isaac Washington Pierce Jr., the father-in-law of Louis Leander Cardon, was born 22 Aug 1839 in Jacksonville, Morgan, Illinois and died 21 Aug 1906 in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Nathan Harris Terry, the father-in-law of Emanuel Alonzo Cardon, was born 23 Feb 1949 in Carterville, Pottawattamie, Iowa and died 4 Nov 1902 in Colonia Dublán.

William Carrol McClellan, the father-in-law of Joseph Samuel Cardon, was born 12 May 1828 in Shelbyville, Bedford, Tennessee and died 28 Apr 1916 in Colonia Juarez.

Lycurgas Wilson and his wife Lois Ann Stevens also died in Colonia Juarez.  She died 16 Sep 1905 (or 1904).  He died 1 Apr 1911.  The are the maternal grandparents of Lucinda Hurst who married Joseph Elmer Cardon.

Philip Hurst, the paternal grandfather of Lucinda Hurst, also died in Colonia Dublán on the 14th of July, 1901.  He was born on the 15th of September, 1836, in Frimley, Surrey County, England.
